This exploration of the the media in the United States looks closely at our media's history and development, as well as the kinds of bias we don't think about.

Urrea, Luis Alberto. The Devil's Highway.

Luis Alberto Urrea's book looks at U.S. border policy and the fate of a group of men who, in May 2001, attempted to cross the Mexican border into the southern Arizona desert-- the titluar "Devil's Highway." Though it was published in 2004, it remains relevant today.

Zinn, Howard. A People's History of the United States

Howard Zinn's groundbreaking book looks at the American History that's not usually taught in schools, looking less at the achievements of powerful men and more at the lives of the disenfranchised.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

From the United Nations website: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.

New Yorker writer Jill Lepore tackles the history of the United States from 1492-2016 in this single volume history of the United States.
